Valoración del carácter y el bienestar animal en un albergue canino municipal

Abstract

En este trabajo se procede a la adaptación e implementación de un test de comportamiento canino, en el albergue canino municipal de Córdoba, España. El test está formado por 17 de las pruebas más frecuentes en la literatura científica, adaptadas a la realidad de los albergues caninos municipales. Los resultados muestran que los perros que participan en las sesiones de ejercicio y contacto humano tienen niveles más bajos de cortisol en saliva, y obtienen mejor puntuación en el test de comportamiento. Por tanto, se puede afirmar que estas sesiones disminuyen el estrés y mejoran el bienestar de los perros alojados en el albergue.

This paper deals with the adaptation and implementation of a dog behavior test in the municipal animal shelter of Córdoba, Spain. The test consisted of 17 trials, the most frequent in scientific literature, adapted to the reality of municipal dog shelters. Results show that dogs which take part in the exercise and human contact sessions have lower levels of cortisol in saliva and achieve a better score in the behavior test. Therefore, we can say that these sessions reduce the stress level and improve the welfare of those dogs in the shelter.
