Las traducciones españolas de Wuthering Heights: plagios flagrantes

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es abordar las versiones al español de una singular obra del romanticismo inglés, Wuthering Heights, que ha sido considerada por la crítica como un importante hito en el panorama clásico de la novela inglesa. Las traducciones, sin embargo, de esa obra son un cúmulo de equívocos propiciados por el plagio poco escrupuloso de ediciones anteriores, con escaso respeto por los derechos del traductor. Tratamos en este artículo de señalar solo algunas de los errores cometidos en cadena por los traductores a lo largo del siglo XX que copian de forma ciega. Es imposible llegar a las verdaderas causas de tan censurable proceder ¿Era tanta su inseguridad que necesitan apoyarse en versiones ajenas por miedo a cometer errores al interpretar una obra decimonónica escrita en una lengua que no dominan? Sea cual fuere el motivo de tanto plagio, el caso es que nadie ha reclamado ese derecho de copyright de la traducción a su favor. Tal vez porque cada uno se sentía deudor de alguien anterior.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the translations of a unique work of the English Romanticism into Spanish. Indeed Wuthering Heights has been highlighted by the critics as an outstanding landmark in English novel writing. The several Spanish translations of it though tend to miss the mark. The most common feature in them all is blatant plagiarism, where all respect for translation copyright is utterly disregarded. It is my purpose here to go into some blunders where successive 20th century translators fall into the trap of blindly copying them. It is impossible to go into the causes of such reprehensible behaviour but we can imagine it was the lack of self-confidence in a language they didn‟t master. Whatever the causes for such behaviour, they never claimed their translation rights, as they perhaps felt they were in debt with previous authors.
