Evaluación técnica de sitios Web para el aprendizaje autónomo de inglés como segunda lengua

Abstract

Conscientes de la necesidad imperiosa de ser competente en lenguas extranjeras en nuestros días, habida cuenta de las exigencias actuales del mercado laboral, en el presente estudio dirigimos nuestra atención al aprendizaje autónomo de idiomas y a los recursos en Internet disponibles para ello. Concretamente, nuestro trabajo persigue analizar una herramienta didáctica en línea gratuita y de acceso libre para la enseñanza del inglés (ESOL Courses) con el propósito de evaluar su calidad desde un punto de vista técnico, atendiendo a los criterios de funcionalidad y usabilidad. Este sitio Web se incluye en las herramientas seleccionadas para el proyecto de investigación LinguApp en el que participamos como investigadoras, donde detectamos la necesidad de explorar, además del contenido per se, aspectos escasamente estudiados relativos a la funcionalidad y usabilidad como subcaracterísticas de la utilidad de una herramienta (Lu y Yeung, 1998) y que condicionan la experiencia del usuario. Para ello, hemos creado una lista de verificación (checklist) que cubra los elementos esenciales en términos de funcionalidad y usabilidad Web en función de la literatura revisada y del análisis previo del proyecto LinguApp. Los resultados revelan que las limitaciones técnicas pueden conllevar a la desmotivación del alumno y a la falta de aprovechamiento de la herramienta por no cumplir unos estándares mínimos de calidad

Fully aware of the imperative need to be successfully competent in foreign languages, in the light of present-day market requirements, this paper focuses on the autonomous language learning and the Internet resources available for this purpose. Our study specifically pursues to analyze one free, open-access online web tool for English learning (ESOL Courses website) with the aim of evaluating its quality from a technical point of view, mainly based on the functionality and usability criteria. The selected website is amongst those included for assessment in the LinguApp research project in which we actively participate as researchers. From its early stages we identified the need to explore, besides the site content itself, other issues that have apparently received less attention concerning functionality and usability as subfeatures of the usefulness of a web tool (Lu and Yeung, 1998), thus impacting the user experience. For this purpose, we have created a checklist that includes the key aspects regarding web functionality and usability on the basis of the reviewed literature and the analysis carried out as part of the LinguApp project. The results reveal that technical shortcomings may result in reducing student motivation and lead to the under-utilisation of the online resource for failing to meet the minimum quality standards
