En torno al relicario seiscentista de Santo Tomás de Villanueva, “A fin que se entienda más la devoción de dicho santo” en la catedral de Coimbra

Abstract

La devoción de Santo Tomás de Villanueva encontró particular expresión en territorio portugués en la Catedral de Coimbra, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII, contando con el empeño particular de los obispos D. Frei Álvaro de São Boaventura y D. João de Melo. De las relaciones iniciales entre la Iglesia conimbricense y el Cabildo valenciano, tendría lugar por parte de este último, un conjunto de regalos artísticos, entre los que sobresale el relicario de Santo Tomás de Villanueva, que integra actualmente el acervo del Museo Nacional Machado de Castro, trabajo que creemos salido de un taller de la ciudad de Valencia en la década de los ochenta del siglo XVII.

The devotion of Saint Tomas of Villanueva found particular expression in Portuguese territory in the Cathedral of Coimbra, during the second half of the 17th century, with the particular commitment of the bishops Frei Álvaro de São Boaventura and João de Melo. From the initial relations between the Conimbricense Church and the Valencian Council, there would take place from the latter, a set of artistic offerings, among which stands out the reliquary of Saint Tomas of Villanueva, which currently integrates the collection of the Machado de Castro National Museum, work that we believe came out of a workshop in the city of Valencia in the eighties of the seventeenth century.
