Traducir a Victor Hugo en España en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX

Abstract

This work aims to present a general overview of the translations of Victor Hugo in Spain in the second half of the 19th Century. This is a period seldom explored by researchers, who -quite surprisingly- have paid little attention to it, even if it largely coincides with the years in which Hugo lived (he died in 1885). This study articulates around two topics: on the one hand, the translations of Hugo’s early works, that is, those from his genuinely Romantic period; on the other, the translations of those works -mainly from the period in question- in which the author, and to a large extent his translators too, adhered to a social and political compromise.

Este trabajo pretende ofrecer una visión general de la situación de las obras de Victor Hugo en España en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, trash aber constatado que se trataba de una época poco cultivada por los investigadores, a pesar de coincidir dicha época con los años en los que vivió Hugo (fallecido en 1885). El presente artículo trata dos ejes fundamentales : las traducciones de los primeros trabajos del autor, pertenecientes al periodo genuinamente romántico, y las traducciones de aquellas obras en las que Hugo pone de manifiesto un claro compromiso político y social.
