There is no doubting the existence of a relation between Cinema and Literature. Examples of literary works adapted for the screen abound, a number of them clearly box-office successes, as well as film-festival award winners. The debate concerning the hierarchical interaction of Literature and the Seventh Art, still notsettled, brings to the fore the possibility of representing in two different ways a single aesthetic reality. However, the reception of Art, either through one medium or another, is inevitably conditioned by the means and conditions by which literary texts and film texts are seen to take shape. Besides the version at source in which the cinematographic work is created, a third factor comes into play which is decisive with regard to the reception of the film as a work of art and thus, also, to a certain extent, to that of the literary work: the audiovisual translation of the cinematographic product, either by means of subtitling or via dubbing. As part of this same translation, what acquires special relevance is the transfer of cultural features, given that,to a significant extent, it is only through an adequate presentation of theseon screen, as well as in the dialogues concerned, and in the screenplay itself, that the spectator will be given access to those further cultural elements present in the literary work, the genesis of, in some cases, and, in others, the model for the cinematographic work.
