The present study aims to describe the current state of Tolkien’s translations into French and Spanish, as well as to present a bibliographical review of the academic studies carried out about the translation of his work. Even though ithas enjoyed a great publishing successand it is still undoubtedly popular, Tolkien’s work hasoften been regarded as “paraliterature”, to which it couldbe added the lack of academic research about his work. In France and Spain translationsappeared much later than the original works and werecarried out by different translators. However, in France, thanks to the academic interest of authors such as Vincent Ferré, a newretranslation and homogenization project has recently been carried out. This project has consequently increased the interest in academic literature, which has undoubtedly contributed to the restitution of the literary value of Tolkien’s work. The present contribution therefore suggests the possibility and need of a similar project in Spanish, where academic research is scarce and translations were accomplished less homogenously and in different time periods.
